Anuradhapura

Beginning a new era of the island, Anuradhapura is considered to be the first kingdom of Sri Lanka, an archeological marvel.

Reigning as the kingdom from 5th century BC to the 11th century AD, Anuradhapura marked many events in history which would set the course for the future.
Acceptance and inauguration of Buddhism in the country took place in this period under Royal patronage.
What is considered to be the oldest living tree to be planted by the human race was brought and placed here in Anuradhapura, being a branch brought from the very same tree where Lord Buddha attained enlightenment.

The ancient capital is abounding of interesting archeological sites. Starting from the eight sacred religious places, an ancient university, a hospital, manmade lakes and colossal Dagobas, the are sure to mesmerize any traveler.

Located in the North Central part of the island, this UNESCO World Heritage site presents a unique history to discover.

Polonnaruwa

The succeeding kingdom to Anuradhapura, the kingdom of Polonnaruwa in the North Central region is an era to unite the entire nation together.

Sovereignty was won back for Polonnaruwa to be made the capital and for the kingdom to rule from the 11th to the 13th century. A new journey to rework and rebuild, the country was made self sufficient in this period. Undoubtedly this is a fitting destination to be identified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The ancient city is spread across with well preserved ruin sites, ranging from the Royal palace to sacred temples, shrines and intricately built statues. It makes one wonder of the master skill the craftsmen of the past had.

A resounding statement made and realized by an ancient king still echoes when viewing the enormous lake that “no drop of water falling from the heavens is to flow to the ocean without mankind making use of it”.

The country’s only primate research center is also found in Polonnaruwa.

Dambulla

A unique ancient temple complex that is elevated high on a rocky outcrop, and sheltered under a massive rock face which makes it so special.

Considered to be the best preserved cave temple complex in Sri Lanka, this wonder from 1st century BC is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

A place built in appreciation, make the ascent that is generally considered to be easy and reach the level of the temple complex. A succession of five different caves can be found that emit a sense of reverence.
Each cave has been elaborately decorated with Buddhist murals and houses a vast selection of sculptures and statues.

Situated on a hill, Dambulla is not short of amazing views either. It opens up to stunning panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.

Located in the central region, Dambulla is also the preferred destination to conduct scenic hot air balloon rides over the scenic fields and lake of the Kandalama village, which is carried out on a seasonal basis.

Sigiriya

An unfathomable marvel of architectural and technological excellence, Sigiriya is the awe-inspiring fortress in the skies.

A result of a family feud in the ancient times made Sigiriya to be chosen as the capital by a singular king, in the 5th century.

Travel through a selection of meticulously planned pleasure gardens and begin the ascent, where one can witness the stunning frescoes and the mirror wall. Reach the intimidating set of lion paws the gateway to the peak. The final climb would be slightly more demanding, but is definitely worth it.
At the peak, scenery opens to a 360 degree view of the lush surroundings. Old palace ruins can be seen and the splendor of this venue is evident even after a millennium.

Being located in the central part of the island within the famous cultural triangle, Sigiriya is also rightfully designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Fascinatingly, another rock hill can be located in the vicinity, the Pidurangala rock. Reaching the top of this rock involves a more challenging and adventurous climb. But the two rocks offer unique views of each other complimenting the experience.
