Jaffna

Galle

The port city in the southern coast, Galle is an important location that marks a significant point in history, which commenced the era of colonization.

The name of the town literally translates as “the city of gems”. In the island with abundance of natural resources this is the town famous for gemstone mining.

With a famed history for gem mining and trading since the ancient times, one is able to see and learn of this unique industry here in Ratnapura. One is able to visit a gem mine and walk through the process from mining the precious stones to cutting and polishing them that transforms the raw gems in to dazzling jewels that catch the eye.
